The journey through an airport is a uniquely human experience, where we navigate a sea of people from all walks of life who have their own unique stories. Our latest installation, The Strangers Project, offers a unique opportunity to bring those stories to life.
We are proud to partner with New York-based initiative The Strangers Project to share everyday stories at John F. Kennedy International Airport’s Terminal 8. Hundreds of written stories have transformed the otherwise utilitarian construction barricades into an interactive exhibit. Passengers and airport employees have the opportunity to discover the stories of others, and also share their own.
“To watch customers and folks across airport community pause along their journey and engage with this exhibit is a true testament to the power of connection,” said Ian Carter, Vice President, JFK at Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield. “We are grateful to partner with The Strangers Project to bring these voices of the human experience to life at JFK Terminal 8—a nexus for people of all ages and backgrounds from around the world. This unique activation helps to enhance the experience while we work to transform the terminal.”
Brooklyn-based artist Brandon Doman started the project in 2009 and has traveled around the country collecting stories and exhibiting the heartfelt notes. The exhibit celebrates the daily stories of the strangers we share our space with and our own stories.
“Bringing the Strangers Project to an airport has been a long-held dream of mine,” said Doman. “In a place where so many paths cross, this story wall invites travelers to pause and connect with the universal emotions and experiences that bring us together.”
He built the project on the simple question, “What’s it like being you?” and has collected more than 95,000 handwritten, true, and anonymous answers. A selection of these answers is displayed in this exhibit and others across the country.
The Strangers Project will be up in Terminal 8 through 2025.
